Alaska Fishing Trip

Sunday, July 30, 2006

These pictures smell funny

Skating with zeb is super extra lame, or is it the coolest most awesome thing ever?

7-11 is a store that smells really unique. Zeb couldn't get any more hip, or he'd explode.

We live in this place that has lots of crazy things.

I like drawing on whiteboards that are at other people's houses.

One year

Hi Nate,

Wow. You have been on a mission for a year!!! I can't believe it. Elder Cerny rocks for a year. That is so great. You probably speak Spanish so well that there is no hope for me comprende you.

John came home from Alaska last night safe and sound. He had a beard from so much fishing. The airline left his fish in Seattle where he had a lay over, but they brought it to our house at 4am. I am very glad that he is home!

In my cancer class I have been learning about how people gain resistance to chemotherapy drugs. After a while, many people can start to pump the drug out of their cells before the drug can do anything. It is interesting.

We are all very excited for Kara's wedding. Mike's sister's name is Aly too. Isn't that so great? AND . . . John and Mike have the same middle name (David). It was meant to be!

We pray that Heavenly Father will watch over you and prepare you every day to teach the gospel.

Love,
Aly

Mom and I are just back from aquick trip to Idaho. We were with the Bell's. You are still the best wke boarder. Wes did seem to get his form back though. Dave tried a flip, but he was unsuccessful.
Wes drove the boat to Sand Point. He has a new (used) car. A Toyota Sequoia. It has 8 cylinders and pulled the boat very well.
Mom and I flew to Spokane. We left the house late and had to run through the Salt Lake Airport carrying incredibly heavy bags. It was both exhausting and exhilarating.
Incredibly, we had to do the exact same thing on the way back. Mom and I never learn.
(The Delta employees sure can give you one incredible lecture, and make it sound like you can't get on the plane.)
Mom did make her goal of going over both wakes. I still cannot get over the wake. Everyone thinks that mom will be as good as me in just a week or two.
I went on a 10k run with Dave and his brother, Richard, on Monday morning. They killed me. Later Dave admitted that he had not sold me the really fast shoes like I had thought. At least I had an excuse.
Dave had a new girl friend this time (so what's new). Her name is Megan. don't get too excited. You know Dave.
While Dave's sister Angie was wakeboarding, she face planted and knocked the bonding off of her front teeth. We hope to repair it this weekend, before she has to go back to Moab.
Trieste and Sarah are incredibly cute.
Love and Kisses, DAD

Wow. I was able to get on the blog, thanks to John. My email is really screwed up.
We are headed out tonight to fly to Idaho to spend three days with Wes and Dave at Sand Point. I will be looking for the spots where you did your flips last year.
We will be there tomorrow, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Tomorrow is also pioneer day.
I will also be swimming in the lake, because I have the world championships on August 4th.
We were with the missionaries today. Our Sacrament meeting was awesome. Some really good singing and some good talks.
Last night we watched Xander. He wouldn't go to sleep for the longest time. He only wants to wear his diaper and maybe his sandals. It is a fight to get anything else on him.
Mom is doing great. Of course, al the missionaries love her. We will be talking next week in sacrament meeting.
It has been really hot here, but I am sure, not as hot as there.
There are 10,000 entrants in the Masters Swimming World Championships at Stanford University. It lasts for a week, but I am only going to swim one race--the 800m free. I am so glad that I do not have wait around to swim more races. Of course, Graham will be there, winning almost everything. He aged up this year.
Brynn is goin to be baptized on August 5th. I do not know who will baptize her. I wish that it were Kirk. He is a priest in the Aaronic Priesthood. I will be flying back from the World Championships on Saturday morning and going directly to the baptism. If I am not there on time, they better wait for me. I do not want another Ender-like episode.
We are working on Kara's wedding--mostly, I am just trying to stay out of mom's way. She is going to wear Aubrey's dress. She looks great in it. We will get you all of the pictures you need. Don't worry.
Love and Kisses, DAD

Nate this is where I work, Isn't Kirk adorable!?

Hi Nate,

Hi Nate,

John is STILL in Alaska and he said they only caught three fish. I think he has been there forever. He said that everyone was sad because the fish were not coming up the river to be caught. The fish are supposed to swim up the river at this time of year and get caught in the fishwheel. They had a permit to catch 1,500 pounds, but the fish did not want to be caught. Hopefully they will catch more fish in the next few days.

Floyd Landis from team Phonak won the Tour de France. He had a bad day in the Alps and dropped down to 11th place (8 minutes behind). The next day he had a fantastic ride and ended up only 30 seconds behind the leader (action time!). The announcers said it was the best individual effort they had ever seen in the Tour. He made up the 30 seconds in the time trial yesterday. It was pretty exciting.

I hope that you are teaching lots of investigators. Do it, do it, do it. What kinds of questions do they ask? I pray that you and your companion will teach with the Holy Ghost and I pray that the investigators will feel the light of Christ.

Love,
Aly

Zeb is drum king

Look at Him. He plays beats with energy and emotion.

Isaac is leaving the bathroom as he found it, with the light off.

This guy got a camera, and skate pictures will start to pop up like zits on a teen.

John went to Alaska

Hi Nathan,

Today John went to Alaska and is going to fish with a fish wheel. It looks like this. The water pushes the wheel around and the fish get caught in the basket. They can catch so many fish. Last year they caught 400 pounds. Whoa. I don't know how there are any fish left.

Today I got to go to my cancer class and learn about chemotherapy. It was really interesting because my teacher was talking about how chemotherapy is changing from being broad spectrum to having more specificity. They are beginning to understand cell signaling and signal transduction more so they are able to make drugs that target certain signals. These drugs are much less toxic beause they are more lethal to cancer cells and not normal cells. I say, "Hey, that's what I study. Signal transduction and cell signaling." It is very interesting to me. They are understanding diabetes more too.

I was thinking about how to be a good leader this week because, like John wrote, we talked about it in Sunday School. I was thinking that investigators probably like hearing about President Hinckley. He is a great and loveable leader. So loveable! When he asked everyone to read the Book of Mormon, so many people did because they love President Hinckley and all that he says.

I hope that you are doing so great. You have almost been on a mission for a year. You are probably a great Spanish speaker. We pray for you.

Love,
Aly

A Message From Anne

Now Anne will tell a story she heard at the MTC this past week...

A former 70 Dallas Merrell went to BYU and didn't have any friends or know anyone. So he prayed to find some friends. The spirit told him to be a helping friend. So he tried hard to remember the name of everyone he met and to help them. He was then elected president of the BYU student body. Later on he was in Australia as a representative of the church. He was asked to hear the pope speak at a big conference. The pope was late, so he went around meeting everyone. He discovered what church everyone was representing and what they believed in. Up on the stand, the third cardinal was watching him. After the pope spoke, the third cardinal came up to Bro. Merrell and asked him who he was. He said he was impressed by his friendliness. Bro. Merrell became friends with the third cardinal. The third cardinal is now the pope and is dear friends with Bro. Merrell and has opened up many, many archives that the Catholic church has of the early Catholic church. The third cardinal was organizing a big conference for catholic youth and asked Bro. Merrell for help. Bro. Merrell offered to have the missionaries help with the conference. He said they would take off their name tags and wouldn't proselyte. The Catholic church said that would be great. Then they started the conference. After watching the missionaries, they said they wanted the missionaries to keep helping, but to wear their name tags so everyone would know who they were because they were so impressed by the missionaries.

We are eating grain mix bread

We are eating grain mix bread. It is very good. I am the proud owner of two loaves of grain mix bread (my birthday present). I am not going to share with anyone (except maybe my wife Aly). Aly and I pray that you will find awesome investigators. We learned about being a leader in Sunday school today. One of the most important things about being a leader is to be nice to everyone. You are nice to everyone, so we think you are a good leader. Keep up the good work.

Love, John & Aly

How is the Natey???

Hi Nate,

We hope that you are doing so well. Grandpa wrote us a funny letter. He was telling us that Aunt Marsha had showed him pictures from the wedding. He wrote, "Then too I saw my son in formalwear and in a good business suit. I never saw him in formal wear before. All I could say to myself was 'he looks distinguished. What a wonderful son.' I proudly show off my son when I get people to look at the pictures. And your mother looking so good in her dress. What a family!"

Nate, you missed seeing William in formalwear!!! Hee hee.

I got to see Kara trying on wedding dresses yesterday. She was such a cutie in them all. Mikey Apple is going to have googly eyes on their wedding day. She looked so pretty in Aubrey's dress!!!

I have been doing lots of work in my lab for my cancer scholarship. I hope that I will be able to have some good results by August.

John loves to eat mom's grain mix bread (GMB aka Good Mama Bread). Mom got me a wheat grinder for Christmas, but I didn't want it. When would I ever use a wheat grinder? Now John asks me if he can get a wheat grinder for Christmas. It is funny. We went to see the Stadium of Fire fireworks last Saturday night.

We pray that you can have lots of investigators. We pray that they will have lots of questions. We pray that they will feel the spirit. We pray that they will gain a testimony. We think you are doing a great thing. It is really a big service.

Love,
Aly and John

Scratch and win

Nathan,
Don't worry. The Tour de France started today and I will loyally play scratch and win every day for you. I used your gmail address and the password is tourdedr. If you want to play on your p-day, the web site is trekbikes.com. This year you scratch with Bob's face. It is funny. If you win the ride with Lance, I think he will gladly come to the DR.

I am trying to get John to play. He has like 26 e-mail addresses already. The probability for winning with that many e-mail addresses is enormous. He just told me that he really has over 30! Woweee! We are going to win the ride with Lance.

They kicked a few guys out for drug use. Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso were two of the top guys that had to go home. They say it should be the cleanest tour that they have had in a long time.

We wish you all the best. -Aly and John
